MOTIONS: European Consortium for Driver Monitoring Systems

Awarded ITEA Label number 25032 in the Cluster 2025 call, the MOTIONS project sets out to enhance sustainability, safety and efficiency in electric and connected vehicle fleets through AI-driven driver behaviour analytics.

MOTIONS is a 13-company international consortium shaping Europe's next-generation Driver Monitoring System (DMS) and platform architecture. The project was evaluated in the ITEA Cluster 2025 call and awarded Label number 25032, with national funding applications actively running across four countries.

In the project's own words, MOTIONS aims to "deliver an AI-driven platform to enhance the sustainability, safety and efficiency of electric and connected vehicle fleets." The system leverages behavioural analytics, edge computing and route optimisation to turn real-time driver and vehicle data into actionable operational insight. The engineering scope is far broader than a classical DMS deliverable.

Consortium structure

MOTIONS runs across a comprehensive consortium of 13 companies and four countries. Project leadership is held by Hepsijet (Alper Gün). One of the consortium's strongest aspects is its complementary expertise: academic research, OEM perspective, Tier-1 depth, and operational fleet data sit under one roof.

Technical architecture and layers

The MOTIONS platform sits on three core layers. The first is in-cabin sensor fusion: face-camera AI for attention detection, physiological data (heart rate, eye movement), and real-time integration of steering and pedal behaviour. Smart Eye's mature DMS hardware experience forms the foundation of this layer.

The second layer is edge computing optimisation: balancing pre-processing in the vehicle for cost, latency, and energy efficiency. NEXION EDGE and Solvesall Labs mathematically optimise how much of the critical driver behaviour decisions stay inside the vehicle and how much rises to the cloud.

The third layer is fleet-level analytics and route optimisation: GoOpti's operational mobility data, Hepsijet's last-mile fleet reality, and Innovance's analytics backbone combine into a three-dimensional decision-support interface — driver behaviour, vehicle health, and route efficiency.

Uzay Tech's role in MOTIONS

Uzay Tech holds leadership in two main areas of MOTIONS. The first is the primary development ownership of the Driver Monitoring System (DMS) algorithms — detection of driver attention level, classification of fatigue and distraction, and derivation of behavioural signals at fleet scale are all designed and implemented by the Uzay Tech team. The second is the end-to-end leadership of system integration and validation: bringing the modules developed by the 13 partners under one coherent logical fabric and running them through a validation flow compliant with OEM safety requirements sits with Uzay Tech.

Expected market impact

MOTIONS' AI-driven driver behaviour analytics translates directly into operational cost reduction and insurable-risk mitigation for commercial fleet operators. Europe's General Safety Regulation (GSR) — Phase 2 in particular — mandates DMS for heavy-duty and N-category vehicles. MOTIONS sits at the intersection of regulatory compliance and operational efficiency.
